Airmont lies west of Monsey along the New Jersey line. We travel there from Spring Valley to repair chimney masonry, crowns, liners, flashing and leaks.

The Village of Airmont was incorporated in 1991 from the hamlets of Tallman, Airmont and South Monsey. Its southern boundary is the New Jersey state line. Census figures show the village filling in, from about 1,858 people per square mile in 2010 to about 2,227 in 2020.
More people on the same land means new houses, second stories and additions. Each of those can change the roofline around a chimney that was built for a smaller house.

Chimney height after an addition
Building codes set a simple rule for chimney height. The top must be at least three feet above the roof where the chimney passes through, and at least two feet higher than any part of the building within ten feet.
An addition or a raised roof can leave an existing chimney below that line. A chimney that is too low next to a taller roof drafts badly and can push smoke back into the house. Wind coming over the new roof presses down on the flue opening. The usual fix is to extend the chimney, which is masonry work, and to check the flashing where the new roof meets it.
