The Village of Suffern was incorporated in 1796 and sits at the foot of the Ramapo Mountains beside the New Jersey line. It is compact. The 2020 census counted 4,709 households in about 2.1 square miles.
Old, closely built villages have old chimneys. Many were laid with a soft, lime-rich mortar and some predate clay flue liners altogether. It is also common for one chimney to carry more than one flue, with a boiler or furnace on one and a fireplace on another.

Repairing an older chimney properly
On an older chimney the repair has to suit the materials. Repointing uses a mortar no stronger than the original, so the joints stay the sacrificial part of the wall. An unlined flue or one with failed tiles is relined before it is used, since bare brick does not contain heat or flue gas safely.
Access is part of the job too. Where houses stand close together and roofs are steep, the work is planned around how the chimney can be reached safely.
